Spring's Not Far Away

Anyone notice that when they have really bad weather in the USA, we seem to get it eight or ten weeks later? We're certainly having a bad spell at the moment. Still, if you watch the TV weather maps you might notice that there is often a sort of wedge in the rainy area - just over Rhyl. Maybe the tourist catch phrase "Sunny Rhyl" has a grain of truth in it.

Over the last couple of weeks, on my daily walk along the beach it's been good to see the sand being cleared off the promenade with a counil digger. When the wooden sand barriers come down we'll know that spring is not far away. For myself, I can't wait.

Having empty roads in the winter is a bit of a mixed blessing. When we get a sunny day, I like to go out into the countryside for a nice long drive - especially into Snowdonia. Unfortunately everywhere seems to be shut. In the summer when we have all that traffic, lots of pubs are open serving snacks and meals. Come the winter and it's almost impossible to find somewhere that will serve a pint and a pie. Driving along you'll see the sign saying "Good Food Served All Day" - then when you stop, go into the car park and walk to the door you find that the place is locked up. Why don't they cover the signs up in the winter when they're shut?

Food, Food, Glorious Food....

Only a few years ago, I'd be able to put down a big three-course meal. Now that I'm older I have great difficulty in clearing my plate. I've always liked my food and enjoy eating out, but now I usually leave a lot on my plate. I don't know if it's because I'm not as active or whether my stomach's shrunk. Maybe a bit of both. I still enjoy good food though, and we were pleased when the Captain's Table Carvery opened on the East Parade. Just after they opened we went in for a roast dinner and I was really disappointed - they only have dried up roast beef, no roast potatoes and only one vegetable. I suppose we should have just left but didn't. Apparetly they'd run out of meat. You'd think that they would have told us wouldn't you. The proprieters were supposed to have been in the catering trade in Blackpool for 30 years - and it was odd that they couldn't do better, or at least shown some regret at letting customer's down.

Anyway, not to be negative, I've since been back several times and they seem to have got much better. It's still a bit chaotic behind the servery when, with a queue rignt out of the door, they seem to start cooking veg and potatoes only when they've run out at the servery - and then the queue gets longer and longer. Still the food is indeed good and worth waiting for, and the prices are excellent.

Lights Out In Rhyl

Yesterday (Wednesday 16th January) we went into town to do some shopping in Wilkies and have a browse around the shops in the White Rose Centre. We were lucky that we'd just filled our basket and were having a last look round when Wilkies was plunged into darkness. Fire drill? A real fire? No, the power had gone down. It was fortunate that they had two tills still working so we were able to pay for our purchases and leave. Still, we thought, we could still have a browse round the shops in the White Rose Center. No chance - when we got there all the shops were in darkness, though luckily the entrances/exits had been left open so we could at least get through to the car park.
